Funny thing about that dog tag. I was under the impression that the serial number of a soldier/marine/airman was the social security number MINUS one number.. That one has all 9..

I'm not familiar with a USMC ID tag minus the blood group (type).
The "S" represents a 'small' size for a gas mask.
It could be a custom made (fashion) tag (Dog Tags) rather than government issued.

Me either.. that, and the lengthened serial number, make me think that is not a real dogtag.
And isn't the religion usually abbreviated?

But I could be wrong, I have never been in the service.

How many Maxwell's are in your local phone book?
If only a couple, you may wish to call them and see if they can shed some light on the ID.
I have no doubt you'll get cooperation if you express your intent to return the tag to the Marine, his family or next of kin.

Dog tags have the SSN on them. There is a M J Maxwell in TN on the zabasearch link I provided.

Please remove the pic of the dogtag. You are putting out private information and subjecting Mr. Maxwell to identity theft because of it.
