Baldingboy and I have been hunting a really old place for quite some time now and each time we go back we manage to find one or two more things. I have been working really hard to understand the E-trac's 2 tone ferrous and this trip was no different. I dug everything that beeped and wasn't iron and I can now pretty much say about 80% of the time I am over a pulltab or scrap aluminum . This hunt I dug up 4 and a half pounds of aluminum cans, pull tabs and can slaw(some of the weight I'm sure is from the dirt in the cans etc). I dug a total of 178 holes in a three and a half hour hunt! And man was I tired at the end of the hunt.

For the 178 targets dug I eneded up with a rifle casing, two pre-1970 pennies (not wheaties) one 16 inch long piece of solid old copper wire and these two V nickels. I don't really know a lot about V nickels, I have only dug three including these two but I think the 1897 is in pretty good shape. And two pre 1900 coins made this a really good hunt for me.

V nickels are really scarce,congratulations!When the 'Liberty' is visable in the crown,then you really have something.Glad the new detector is working out so well for you.

WSD I'm not going to give up on this E-trac until I learn it. About the time I learn it, it will be either a.) time for me to retire and I will be too old to detect of b.) something new and fancier will be out and I will have to start the process all over again of c.) detecting will be made illegal.

And yes, around here we don't find many pre 1900 coins, so finding two in one night was amazing for me. I look at other posts on the forum and think I should be ashamed of posting two cruddy V nickels but you know what? We can't all find awesome treasures like large cents and CW relics so I figure post the best of what I can find.....

And try not to be envious of the people who are finding the above items.

LOL John. My arms are still sore today and I have a blister on my right palm from where the digger rubbed it. But I'm happy with what I found. After cleaning the shell casing I found it says U.S.M.C. 45 Gov't. First one marked like that I have found. Also had two 22 short casings among the aluminum trash.

Congrats!My oldest coin to date and also my only V nickel was also an 1897 I found in an area at my brothers farm that had just been cleared out. Makes me want to head back out there again. Might do that next week. HH

Thanks for counting and posting how many times you had to step up to the plate (holes dug) compared to how many times you connected with treasure.

Many times people see the awesome findings and many may get the impression that you just stepped out, fired up the machine and started grabbing them.

Looking at those poor old corroded nickles, I have to say that I'd be thrilled to death to find them!

Thanks there is a method to my madness. I plan on pulling every repeatable signal out of this place because there is so much trash hiding what I know are good signals. Also the 1897 kind of came in as a junk signal on both the E-trac and SE my buddy was hunting with. If I hadn't dug it that would be one less old coin in my coin book

Dig it all, you'll come home with some surprises. I think I'm the only one around here that digs nickels. They ring up as shotgun shells. I have places I've hunted where that's all I found was nickels. That's OK with me! I'll dig 'em. This past relic season I dug V's and Shields where there was nothing else. And remember, not every keeper is going to ring loud and clear. I've dug some signals that just sounded horrid but turned out to be awesome. Maybe that's why they got left behind?

Be thankful you pulled that 1897 V nickel: it's in extremely good shape despite the corrosion on top. Full LIBERTY in headband, and lots of details in the hair, probably would grade at least VF20. Clean it if you dare, but be gentle. She deserves as much care as you gave digging her up.

Thanks. I am really happy with the condition of the 1897. I don't think I will clean it any further. The 1896 is in rough shape but I'm still super excited to find it. As for a shield nickel, well I can only dream about finding one of those. In all the time we have been hunting baldingboy has found one and you couldn't read the date. Maybe with the e-trac I might be able to finally find one

Very nice V nickels...especially for around here. As you know, they are seldom legible enough to read due to lack of detail. I was super happy for you. We are just about to get that place vacuumed.


BTW...for those wondering what I found there, my only claim to fame was a 1906 Indian that had a pretty green patina. It was my last signal of the night. What is it with me and decent coins being my last signal of the night??!! I did the same thing when I found a half dime. I claimed I would dig one more signal and call it a night in both these instances. Well anyway, the neat part (I guess) about that Indian is that someone shot it with a .22 and it is bowed and has a ping mark along one edge. I can post a pic if anyone wants to see it.

We had a good hunt buddy....ahh...except the part where I had to hit you over the head with my shovel. No..actually it was all around a good hunt.

Awesome finds, congrats and thanks for sharing your story. I may try to keep track of how many digs I make compared to the keepers, great idea. Not sure if I can remember that many but I will give it a try.

I would rather find something at the beggining of the hunt. If I find something near what I thought was going to be the end, the end just got extended. It always happens, I find a button or a large cent at the end of a hunt and the hunt just got extended for an hour or two. HH!
