Valentine's Meat Juice was a patent medicine formulated by Virginia dry goods merchant Mann S. Valentine II in the fall of 1870 to cure his ailing wife Anne Maria.

Here is Mr. Valentine:

And here is Anne Marria:

Knowing that Anne Maria couldn’t stomach solid food, while also being in desperate need of nutrients, Valentine formulated a tonic from beef juice and egg whites. The tonic was more effective than beef broth, he reasoned, because boiling meat for broth leaves it “impaired in value". By gently cooking the beef at a low temperature and then pressure-cooking it, he extracted juice from the meat which he surmised would retain more of its nutritional value and would be “acceptable to the most irritable stomach,” he wrote.

Anne Marie soon was cured of her ailment which Mr. Valentine attributed to his preparation. He later devised a meathod of mass production and sold the product to doctors, hospitals, and even to laborers who needed a quick meal without having time to stop working (19th century's equivalent to a "5-Hour Energy" drink).

Dr. Bell's Pine-Tar-Honey for Coughs and Colds was another patent medicine. Founded in 1894 by E. E. Sutherland and Dr. Bell, the firm manufactured, patented, and sold medications worldwide from their headquarters in Paducah, Kentucky.

Ads boasted that it gave "quick relief and permanent relief in grippe as well as coughs and colds."

Great post, awesome finds!!

Love that aqua mason jar! Looks like a pre-1925 jar that used a zinc lid. I only find the aqua jars with glass lids and wire bails at my local dumps. Your jar is not a common find!

Very cool finds, and cool history. Thanks for sharing!

The site I dig was filled until 1924, so pre-1925 mason jars are all I dig there. There are so many of them. What's a typical one worth exactly? Mind you they never have the metal lids as time has rusted them away.

Half gallon aqua mason jars from that era sell for around $15 to $20 at most of my local antique shops. The quarts and pints are usually around $8 to $12 or so. EBay prices are usually less, due to the shipping cost. Having the zinc lid in nice shape adds a couple of bucks to the price.

I have around 75 of that type of jar, but gave up selling them on eBay. Between the shipping cost and the high eBay fees, it wasn't worth it to me.

Really great bunch of finds and a wonderful write-up, thanks for taking the time!
That Dr. Neckbeard was one peculiar looking dude!

Great bottles! I have to say, I've heard of a neckbeard, but wow, thats impressive!

You gotta really not give a crap about what other people think to stop shaving at that location. His wife possibly couldn’t eat because she was laughing too hard. Maybe he was manscaping and got too high.

The 19th century was a real interesting time for beards, I remember when I first learned of General Burnside, and wondered if he had a beard or a mustache. Aparently people back then didn't know the answer to this question either so they just made up a new term for it - side burns, after the guy's name.
