On this day in 1986, Van Halen released 5150 — 40 years ago today!
The album marked a turning point for the band, introducing a new chapter while still carrying the unmistakable Van Halen sound. Named after Eddie Van Halen’s home studio, “5150,” the title itself came from a California code referring to someone deemed mentally unstable.
5150 became the band’s first #1 album on the Billboard 200, finally surpassing 1984, which had been held out of the top spot by Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
Four decades later, it still stands as one of the defining records of the mid-’80s rock era.
