I ordered Sabisch's Quattro book along with the Safari I received on March 6. Per the book, Noise Cancel with the coil on the ground, and use Low Trash Density as the default setting. Per the Safari instructions, Noise Cancel with the coil 12" over the ground, and that is what I have been doing. Also per the Safari instructions, High Trash Density should be the default setting, even though Low gives a little more depth and more dependable meter readings. Maybe it would be best to use the Low setting and scan open areas and then gradually work into the trashiest areas and use High Trash Density. That might ease the task of learning the "flute" sounds one hears when there are lots of items in the ground. One time I spoke with an Explorer owner who said it took a lot of time to learn the sounds, but once he did, he started finding lots of silver coins.

Noise cancell like you detect. If you scrub the ground while detecting put the unit on the ground when noise cancelling. If you don't touch the ground with your coil while detecting keep it off the ground in the air when noise cancelling. Works for me.

Interesting Ed. I wonder if this same technique would apply to the E-Trac? I scrub the ground now because I've noticed you can't get those really deep ones if you don't. Low and slow.

Thinking more about this, if you noise cancel... it's just picking the quietest channel to run on. You can set this manually if you need to scrub but can't find a trash free area. This might take longer, but once you know which channel works well at a sight you could just use that channel every time. Or just air noise cancel in that situation.

Brett,

I agree with what you say. Also lifting in a trashy area is a good idea. What I got from the book is the noise cancelling picks the best frequencies to avoid interference. Yes you van choose it manually. I have found that when I touch the ground I get a null. this is the detector sensing a change in the ground. I suspect this is an impedance change due to contact with the ground. While I think this makes sense, I may still be off or wrong. As for applying this to the E-Trac there is something in Andy's book but I do not remember it.

Sabisch book was OK, no super hot tips. Apparently Quattro quite different from Safari, but can't hurt to read about the Quattro. Judging from Safari manual, Noise Cancel is strictly to tune out EMI, so coil should be away from metal (thus raise 12" above ground) before using.

This weekend I'm going to scan a large park (1 city block) with Sensitivity set at 18 and Low Trash Density. In past years I found an Indian head penny and a Roosevelt silver dime there, but just usual clad since. Maybe I'll do better with the Safari. And by scanning relatively clean open areas, there may be fewer signals and thus easier to learn the "flute." Can wade into the trashy areas around the picnic tables on the periphery of the park later.

Andy has a whole separate book on the Safari. I gave it to the buyer of my Quattro when I sold it. It was specific to the Quattro and I learned a lot from it.

The only book I could find was on the Quattro and I was advised on the Mininelab forum that Andy often posts on that the info on the Quattro was the same as the Safari except for a few minor changes regarding reaction time. Monty

I have the book on the Quattro as the two machines are very similar, only the Safari has an up to date processor that is a little quicker to recover. I am reading it for the third time while the snow is flying here. There isn't one specficaly for the Safari, but there are a couple of short films on youtube I have seen. Monty
