Anyone hunt the beaches around Venice Florida? Just curious. I am going down for a week to visit my son and thought I'd give them a try. I don't think I've ever seen anything posted from the hunters in that area.

There are several locals who hunt that beach. There is another public beach North of Venice at Nokomis. I've found gold rings at both in the past. You'll see a lot of people digging in the shell gravel searching for Sharks teeth. Lots of sharks teeth in that area and further south at Shark Beach. If you are a diver and have access to a boat then motor out about a mile and fan the hardpan potholes for giant sharks teeth, the size of your hand. I know a fellow who has found a couple hundred out there. Best hunting is further north at Siesta Key beach, its flatter with a couple of miles of beach. Its heavily hunted but they never get all of it. Luck to you. ;D

??? A local legend states that when the Venice Inlet was dredged back in the 1960's when there was a jam in the dredge pipe. When the pipe was brought out and back flushed, dozens of gold coins poured out of the pipe. :o Construction workers stopped work and stuffed their pockets full of treasure. The article stated they spent the coins on wine, women and song but I think it was illegal to possess gold coins in those days much less trying to spend them. I know of no treasure salvor ever attempting to retrieve anymore of this treasure. ???

lots of people hunting these beaches, all FL beaches in fact. I am sure you will see a many people hunting.

Mums, whatever you do go to Caspersen Beach, it is south on Harbor Drive, past the airport, golf course and 'Sharkys on the Pier' (and a good place to eat). It is beautiful, undeveloped and has sharks teeth! Oh, and one more thing, when they were dredging the inlet they dumped it behind the beach, it was a convenient place for the County to put the material. I have found Meg teeth there by digging and screening. Just don't dig in the burial mound, you'll see the signs warning you.

Even though I live in Tenn. the Venice area is our favorite vacation spot. Well not quite Venice but just a little south at Englewood. We spend a week a year in Englewood and I hunt twice a day every day during our time there. This is a terrific area and we enjoy Englewood public beach the most. It has enough sharks teeth and pretty shells for us to have fun looking for and there are enough crabs and such to keep our son interested. While they are doing that I am swinging the detector. I did not have much luck this year other than clad but last year I found my best find to date at Englewood. A working Seiko watch. I stopped in a Venice Seiko dealer and he offered me $250 for it. I still have it and it is still running. If you get down to Englewood I am sure you will love it. This year there was one other detectorist there every day I was but he did not get it all either. If you go a little farther down to Boca Grande you will love the lighthouse but watch about getting in the water. It is common to see Barracuda and big sting rays rigth at shore there and sharks are common too. The area is a Fl state park and they would not let me detect there in 2006 but this year I called and got the OK by the parks secretary. When the same ranger that stopped me last year tried to this year I mentioned that, I cannot remember her name, said I could detect he said if she OK'd it then "I was golden and to have good luck. I did not find much there but just getting the OK from the ranger that stopped me last year was worth it. If you want to detect there call the park office and get the name of the person that said detecting was allowed.

All in all this whole area is great. Not commercialized and enough natural items and wildlife to keep you interested if the detecting is not paying off. I cant wait to get back there. Best of luck.

I live just north of there in Sarasota. Your really cant go wrong on any of the public beaches in this area. Just get there at the crack of dawn. The crowds are not to bad this time of year but the heat will run you off around ten or so.

You will find clad at the vary least and sometimes lots of it. Jewelry, keys, key chains, glasses, watches and cell phones are among some of my other less common finds. Beaches are well maintained also. Trash items are there (pull tabs) but there not so abundant that you cant dig just about every decent signal and still cover a good portion of the beach. A good sand scoop will make digging time quick and easy. Our sand is sugar fine and almost anything dropped in the dry is immediately swallowed up and waiting there for you to find.

If our normal afternoon thunderstorm pattern is in place it will mean rain at about 3 or 4 in the afternoon pretty much every day your here. This means a slight cool down and the beaches empty out making late afternoon/sunset hunts pretty decent. People often wait until the vary last moment and then try to gather up all there belongings in a mad dash as the rain hits. This means many items left behind in the hurry and surface and shallow finds are not uncommon.
