I'm looking for a versatile waterproof MD that works equally well in salt and freshwater.

Something in the 400-600 range (new or used in good condition).

Any recommendatons?

Tiger Shark..

How about a used garrett mark II? You'll dig a lot of iron but it works great in the salt water. Mike PS I don't have one for sale.

yep, seahunter mark ll, you'll dig iron and more iron, little bits of iron, and large bits of iron, bobbie pins, ballpoint pen points, bbs, iron, little bits of iron and large bits of iron, pieces of crab traps, sparkler wires, eyeglass frames, some ringsifyou'relucky, someearingsifyou'relucky, iron and more iron. Your left arm will soon resemble Popeyes' but your pouch will resemble a kangaroos with a joey in it.

450.00 plus shipping. 8 inch coil, that's all

I got the TigerShark. I am testing it out on sunday with a hunting buddy of mine.

I checked ebay on an old Garrett XL 500 pi just sold for $255 plus $20. I used one of these for many years and was very successful. I worked ocean beaches only. Unlike the earlier post I found the Garrett to be a very productive machine. I will say I did not have a huge amount of iron in the water where I worked and we all removed the trash which helped. Also with experience you can begin tell by the sound if you have a small iron target. If you install a magnet in your scoop it will make it much easier to capture the small iron objects and you won't waste time chasing them. It has been stated here and other forums by people who have a lot of experience that a PI machine used in fresh water finds a lot more iron objects in part due to more iron in the fresh water. This should be heavily considered before you buy a machine. You asked for a machine that will work equally as well in fresh and salt water for $400-600 IMO you must look at a used machine. I haven't seen many in that price range that really fit your request. Best to you, Mike

There is a VERY remote chance that you could find a used Excal, for $600, but most used ones go for around $800. I would advise you to STRETCH your budget, as whatever you spend can be recovered, depending on your location and level of tenacity. There are really only around 3 that will swing both ways, 2 I have used personally and one I have not. Excal is the #1 choice, imo followed by CZ21-8 and BHID.

I have to agree with the Excalibur recommendation!

Mike

You didn't specify if you wanted a PI or VLF unit. For PI I use a White's Surfmaster PI and for a VLF I use:
