Detector(s) used
Ace 250
My husband is getting me a metal detector for Christmas. I have been wanting to metal detect our yard for a while now. We live in a house that was built in 1847 and started out as a schoolhouse. What do we need to look for in a metal detector? My husband wasn't wanting to spend a whole lot of money as our finances are on the tight side. Thank you for any help you can give. (Wasn't sure where to post this so if I am wrong direct me to the correct spot.)

I'll bet 90% of your responses will say Garrett's ACE 250. Monty

NOT anything that Inexpensive.
NOT even used.
That I'm aware of

Cheryl,
The Garrett Ace 250 is a very good value for the money.
I also think the Fisher 1235 is a good first detector.
There are lots of good deals on detectors by lesser manufacturers, but if going with a first, I would stick to one of the major makers.
Look for tone discrimination, at least an 8 inch coil, and pinpoint mode.
Tone discrimination is very nice to have. If you do not have money for extras, you want an adequate coil size to begin with, and pinpoint is wonderful to have to prevent discouragement in rookies.
Good luck,
Brian

Cheryl, the ACE 250 can be bought for 199.00.For 250.00 you can get the ACE 250 Pro which includes the 9x12 coil also, good value as the 9x12 goes 2-3in deeper. The Minelab Muskie Advantage is 349.00 and it too goes deep but is much heavier.Try to visit a local dealer that carries both Garrett and Minelab to see what you are comfortable with.If no dealer near, stick with the ACE.The Minelab has no id screen and does take several adjustments. The low-end Fishers are not being made anymore. The ACE is a turn on and go w/auto ground balance.Goodluck and HH.Post those finds.

Go with the ACE 250 with the 12 inch coil.........

As an eBay Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
"Digital' is just a catch word. They're nearly all digital technology now days. I 'm pretty sure the one one ebay is a Chinese made detector. Stay away and go with a domestic brand. Monty

I agree with everyone else go with a major brand (Whites, Garrett, Fisher, Minelab)!!
I think you'd be better off going to WalMar* and buying a Bounty Hunter.
If you are only going to detect your yard then you will probably be digging everything anyway
and discrimination isn't a big deal.
If your looking to get into this as a hobby spend a few $$ more and get the ACE 250.

Good Luck and HH
