Very nice grooved axe from Arkansas

This is one of my top ten finds ever.Found this one when I was still in elementary school.It's 3/4 grooved and made of red and brown Jasper.The hammer end may have been heat treated to enhance the color.It was in a field close to Sulphur River in Miller Co.,Ar.

This axe was in a field on a large hill about a mile from the present course of the river.There's a trailer house in the field now.I sure wish they would let me dig up their yard.Just kidding!!

Remedial question here folks. But, besides the asthetic appeal for heat treating ( which probably only modern man enjoys), why would our ancestors do such a thing ? Would not this elevate the danger of popping or breaking the stone?

Boggy Creek is right behind my house.I can almost throw a rock and hit the water from here.Actually have found some pretty nice points back there.Who knows, the indians might have shot them at the monster.You would be surprised how many monster hunters still come through here.
