Medieval disc fibula with nice black stones.

Hi everybuddy!
I hope you all are doing great and not having backpain yet. :)

It was last week that I could go out for swinging but I wouldn't post anything if it was not for this special medallion.

On my first impression it was some kind of junk. Anyway, I put it away carefully. Hopefully I didn't damage it with the spade.
Another bronze medallion came out just a few meters away.P_20200213_143918.webpP_20200213_141101.webp
And the iron stuff was not missing
I was not happy at all turning back home with a heavy bag full of scrap.

But let's get back to the ugly medallion. I decided to have a look at it. With just some tooth stick and water I began cleaning the top surface. More I cleaned it(for hours) more I felt in love. Very nice details became visible.P_20200303_001808.webp
It is a very strange crafting mode. There are two layers of silver and in the middle there is some kind of plaster.

This is how it looks now. Sure I have a lot to do yet but I wanted to share it with you. Any advice would be great.
Thanks guys
Best Vince

Hi Vince, nice finds. Are there any details on the back of either medallion?

No mate, there only two rusty areas the make me think it has been a disc fibula.

Thanks buddy! The only fact I know is that the area was abandoned around the 1350 AD. Most of the coins that I have found there are from the 4th to 1st BC and 5th till 9th AD. I hardly remember any Roman coin. That's all I know at the moment.

Anyone know of a place in the US I can dig 4th to 1st century BC coins? No? Oh well. You're a lucky dog there, Vince. Gorgeous piece!

Disc Fibula............That's great Vince ! I had to look it up. I came across this site that has a picture of a disc similar to yours & a
picture of Otto the Great wearing one to fasten his tunic in place. You probably already seen examples on the internet but the one pictured in this
link has the big stone in the middle surrounded by the 8 smaller stones. Maybe you can zero in on the era. I wonder if the garment it was on is all rotted away
if it was on a garment at all. The disc pictured in the link below is from around the 7th century & is said to be from Frankish tribes of Germany. The second
and third links are about the Franks. Hopefully you can zero in on the exact origin of your disc and hopefully there are more great finds awaiting you in your very
cool search area. Congrats again & Happy Hunting !! J.T.G.

From one link: " Traces of rust remain on the back from a corroded iron clasp. A Frankish man would have used a fibula like this one to pin his cloak at the right shoulder."

Cheers Vince, that sounds right and what I was hoping! Great finds.

Thanks Jose
I don't have an idea either but because of the rust on the back I guess it is a disc fibula. I don't have a better idea yet.
I agree many early Brooches had iron pin attachments.

Nice find. Looks old! I hope you get a positive ID..

Now, where would I ever have learned this except on TNet? Thanks Cru!
