Very Tiny Grease Gun

The markings are hard to read - but I think I see -" UNDER LIC. PAT. APP. 1895 " ??
There are some other words that I can't make out . any ideas ? ( it still has grease residue in it )

Looks small enough to be a chainsaw chain bar greaser. Did they have chainsaws back then?
