One of four ghost towns up in Clear Creek Canyon, Chaffee County. A booming place when mining was at it's peak, with a school, hotels, couple of pool halls, saloons, and a population of about 600 or so. Miners planted balsam poplars along the main drag and they still stand. Buildings on the north side of the street are privately owned. Lots of old mines and mining relics up this canyon and great place to check out if you're up here. Take CR390 and head west at Clear Creek Reservoir. Kinda rough road farther in, but your KIA will handle it. Saw quite a few tourists from out of state, but not real heavy traffic. Place may be a mad house on the weekends though.

Nice photographs! Thanks for sharing...

I had a girlfriend long ago in Salida and her dad showed me a piece of quartz with native gold in it that he said came from this area. He told me he did some trading for it with another fella. Whether it did or didn't come from there, that was the story behind it. It was a nice specimen I recall.

What is the big old wheel apparatus?
