Victorian Buckle Bracelet, 1917 Dog Tax Tag & Two Old Coppers

Found these in the woods over the past week: A nicely decorated Victorian Buckle Bracelet that appears to be brass. It was close to the surface and was an overload signal. A 1917 Smithtown (Long Island) Dog Tax Tag. This was a neat find, since most of my hunting takes place in Smithtown. The slight crack in the center was done by me when when I straightened it. And finally, two old coppers - an 1863 British Half Penny, which registered on the VDI as an unwavering 45, and an old, totally worn smooth colonial copper; probably a King George II, since it's just about the size of a large cent, but noticeably thinner.

Indeed very frustrating - since you spend two hours hunting, looking for a needle in a haystack (especially in the woods), and you finally find what your looking for, but can't identify it. I've said it before: Too bad they didn't carry more SILVER. But we all know how valuable silver coins were back then and why they're not found very often.

I'd bet that dog tag would fetch $100 on eBay. The bracelet is cool too!

Great finds as usual bookfisher. I lived in Centereach and Selden for about 8 years and didn't even think about metal detecting. Now I live in AZ and wish that when I was in LI I knew about metal detecting cuz I could have had a lot of fun. Oh well.....

Nice dog tax tag. I found one in Bishop, Ca. dated 1927. After quite a bit of research I was able to determine that mine is the only one known to exist from Bishop. I was offered $200 for it...I still have it. I sent pictures and story to White's and received a $200 gift certificate unfortunately the story has never shown up on their site. Hang on to yours, research it out.
