I found this on a creek bank in what looks to be a dump site from maybe around the 1920's in very rural OK. I think it's brass and a nice ornate find in amongst broken glass and rusty metal "things". Looks pretty fancy for roustabouts and cowboys. Any ideas?

Re: victorian/european spigot?

I think what you've got there is a gas valve from a wall sconce or early chandelier.

Re: A Remote Possibility (this is interestin)

Check tha size of tha inside hole. Gas
valves have a bigger inside diameter
than a water valve.

I believe you guys are right on tha ID
as a wall sconce.

But there are other remote possibilities.

It took a while to ID this. I thought it
was a wall sconce, but it's not.

It is a water valve for a sight glass that was
on a steam engine for a water pump. That
pump was installed at Little Rock Water in
1898. Tha pump was like this model.

Here is a British patent date for a apparatus
that was part of tha pump.

Here is tha boiler for that pump. It is about
20' long, and 4' in diameter.

Just a bit of odd ball historic info.

It looks like an gas valve. Yours does have the same star. Does your control make a complete turn? Maybe they can be used for both?

What you posted is a piece of a gas chandelier, isn't it?

The star is what reminded me of tha liquid valve.

The valve I found has an inside diamiter much smaller
than a gas valve. I cleaned the inside until it was bare
metal, and tha inside diameter is just over 1/8th inch.

The valve is frozen open.

Both the gas valve and liquid valve are a butterfly type.
90 degreese is wide open.

But, I assuer you, this is not a gas valve. It would not
work for gas.

I think those are called wall sconces.

Would the same star design just mean it was made by the same company? My husband didn't think there would be just a whole lot of people making valves, and they would have been making all kinds. That's just cool to see the same star design. The valves always did seem to be the most interesting part of those big whatever they are things that get left behind in some field. I never have anything with me to cut a valve off, always just a rusted up mess of metal that I can't even begin to pick up much less carry home.

Neat boiler Tabdog, come to think of it, I know where one is in an old school.

Mojax, that's a cool catelogue! must be a wealth of info.

Thanks

Hay NG,

No, I don't think tha star has anything to do with it.
But if I'm wrong, it won't be tha first time,,,lol
