6 hours effort:

22 Roman Coins (2 good album ones)
1 Grotty Roman silver
3 Livery Buttons
3 17th C Tokens
17th C Pot Leg
near blank Sixpence (Geo III)

Bits...
& a Roman Disc Brooch with some enamel.:icon_thumright:

That's a whole lotta roman coins. Great day. That dragon livery button looks like Bill D's wine bottle seal he was trying to identify a few months back. Do you have any info on your button?

Nice brooch! It rarely happens to find one with enamel left!

Only thats its 1830s, I'm still awaiting a experts opinion on them. It might be some time, as I sent 150 pictures.

In our soil conditions, we are lucky to get 1 album coin for every 50 scrappies.:sadsmiley:

Most of the dug coinage that I've seen on the hunts are the same, then there's that certain gem that comes out so nice and one wonders how it can be so different.
For the dug silvers (Roman) do they have a horn crust covering?

The silver vary alot. Most early ones (not debased) come out really nice. Some very black, some burnt, some crusty etc..

That button does appear to have the image resembling a griffin on it, but its hard to see the details. That was apparently a common heraldic symbol used from early colonial times up to, well, the 1800s I guess. Nice stuff as usual Cru!

I'm around Dads whilst he takes all the details from the scrappies; weights etc...

I will post in 1.5 hours.

Do you do research before going out? You find such amazing artifacts I can't believe it's just happenstance. I have been enamored with the Arthurian tales since I was a child. & still read anything about that "age" I can find. Do you concentrate on areas know to have been raided by Saxons?

Its hard to research ancient sites, specially when we are the first to discover them. However, we do (or at least our 3rd silent partner does) research the Archaeological records, plus I have found many areas on google earth. But there is nothing better than boots on the ground & we can quickly work out if a field is worth doing, although over the most recent years we have been far more targetted.

No, I don't do Saxon raided areas, I'm not on the coast.

PS. we use our landscape archaeological eye to spot the best places, whilst thinking about things like water source etc... This includes fieldwalking for pottery & looking for changes in soil colour & the finest of the soil, ie. not heavy clay
