I Stayed home this time for a half hour hunt in the front yard before dinner. Winds were calm and the sun was going down. The third target up near the road was a nice signal which produced a mere nail. Luckily I scanned the hole once more with my pinpointer and picked up another signal from the side. Out popped a watch fob with a piece of leather still attached to it!

Initially brushing with soapy water and toothpaste showed this to be a STATE OF CONNECTICUT watch fob with traces of silver plating. Aluminum jelly brought out the rest of it plus some scratched in script writing on the bottom of the back. After closer inspection it reads “Danbury Conn”.

The plating seems to fill the grooves of the writing leading me to think that this was plated afterwards? There are other traces of markings above but they are obscured by stubborn crud. I am afraid to risk losing what plating is still on the front by using more jelly.

This is a vintage seal design for Connecticut. The closest I can figure from my research is that this seal was used from somewhere around the 1889 until 1910 or 1931 when the current seal and Armorial Bearings was standardized. An engraving of the 1889 version is attached.

Thanks for looking!
Nick
