Well guys, these finds represent a couple hunts back at my site. Just another knockout weekend, no plates this time around, but a

great amount of bullet, coins, and buttons. This site also had alot of carved bullets which is another sign of daily life in the camp and soldiers carving up bullets. All told bullet tally for

this past weekend: 115 Bullets. I didn't think I'd hit another Virgin site this year that would top the one back in April but this one has definitely done that. Without further adieu, I'll

just post the photos so you can see, thanks for looking fellas and ladies  :icon_thumleft: :

These are some photos of some of the bullets out of the Pouch and still dirty:

There were alot of the usual CW Campsite finds such as these:

Carved bullet made into what looks to be a Bishop Chess Piece, some very pretty CW Tent Rope Tensioners, a couple Scabbard tips and a couple of Eagle Buttons still in the dirt clump

Virgin CW Site 16.webp

This one was a pleasure to see pop out, in great shape:

War of 1812-era Artillery Corps 1-piece Coat Button

This was a rare-"Bird" to find. An Eagle Button still wrapped in Linen:

Civil War Marines Coat Button & Lower Plate to the Clamshell portion of an Officers Shoulder Scale:

These bullets are quite scarce to come by in this part of the Country, and this one popped out in GREAT shape! :hello2:

.44 (.49) Caliber Multi-Ring Sharps and an 1861 Fatty, 1862 Fatty, 1863 Fatty, 1864 Fatty & 1864 Regular Indian

Here's a photo of it still Dirty:

This Campsite had alot of Carved Bullets, here's all of them plus a checkers/poker chip in a single shot:

BUTTONS: Here's the group shot of the 32 Buttons. As you can see many Eagles:

BULLETS: Total for the end of the hunt: 115

On Saturday, I only had a couple hours to dig at the CW Campsite because Abby wanted to go to the Beach. So when I got done digging at the Camp, I left and went to the beach. I decided to do some beach hunting with the ole Whites BeachHunter ID that Rob let me demo for the summer  , why not, a nice change of pace, and a chance to cool down. Well, I ended up getting this 10K White Gold band after about 30 minutes of searching the surf. I'll Take It! :icon_sunny:

Thanks for looking you guys and HH!

Re: VIRGIN UNION CIVIL WAR CAMPSITE: ROUND TWO!!

Josh,I have said it a thousand times before, your posts are just on a whole different level, with quality, presentation, and quantity!I dont think many people understand that hunting these types of site are not "luck",or by chance "tripped",upon,a lot of hard work goes into, learning what to look for, research, and gaining the permission to access, and KEEP!All of which are becoming harder and harder to consistently achieve!I just cant imagine hunting a site like that, and dealing with the anticipation of the "next"return hunt!
I like that wormed Minnie!!

My in-laws lived within view of Diamond head

Way to go Josh. That was awesome. I may have to venture up to Virginia for some hunts now that I am closer. Take care my friend and go get the rest of that camp.
Hello Randy, dang I hate that you won't be able to make it to DIV, I was lookin' forward to seeing you there. That's okay hopefully you'll be set for the hunt in the Spring, that one's going to be NICE. Thanks compatriot and hope you like that new area of Tennessee, we use to vacation all across East Tennessee when I was small: Lookout Moutain, Ruby Falls, Gatlinburg, Big Pigeon River, etc.

Wow! Just WOW! That is an amazing amount of quality finds. Congrats  I'm curious though, how many trash targets did you have to dig to get that many good ones?

HH Charlie

None...well relatively few...if you watch the video on my last post I explain the reason why.

Wow Josh! :o That site will never stop producing for you! :notworthy:
I love the eagle button still wrapped in linen, that's amazing, definitely a museum piece! :hello2:

Congrats on the new website as well buddy!

Dave

PS. I should be getting the 'R' ring back from the restorer's next week!
I'll send you pics as soon as I get it!

Yes, I thought it was just covered with dirt so I put in in a bottle til I got home. Once here I examined it closer and realized it still had Linen wrapped around it. I'll put it aside in my displays, I agree that it doensn't belong with the other run of the mill Eagles, I'll probably put this one in its on small Riker Box.

Thanks much Dave and I'm in anticipation over the finished product, I know that its going to look good! :occasion14:

I agree Evan, it's the first one I've ever seen dug from this area as well, therefore you can imagine it was quite a surprise when I picked it up and realized what it was. Thanks my friend :occasion14:

Excellent finds!! I've only found one untouched camp, and it was only filled with round balls, lol. Do you suppose there was a reunion there at one time? I noticed that there are quite a few "N.H.D.S.V." buttons in the mix. HH!
PinFire, its not uncommon to find a few of those and GAR buttons at old campsites of the Civil War, this one was no exception however those few buttons all came from an isolated spot away from the "main" diggin. The National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (southern branch) evolved from a Civil War hospital created in 1861 to treat the wounded soldiers, it officially became N.H.D.V.S. in 1873 and was located here in Virginia.

Re: VIRGIN UNION CIVIL WAR CAMPSITE: ROUND TWO!!

Kuger, thank you buddy, I couldn't have said it better myself! Your spot on about what it takes to find spots like these and you understand the work involved.

Thanks much man for the compliments I really appreciate them, and you're right, it is a thrill once you do find it, the nervous energy that you have waiting to get back out is enough to keep you awake the entire night :laughing9: :laughing9:

P.S.--That's awesome that your in-laws lived in view of Diamond Head, when I was there, there was NO PLACE that you could look that wasn't absolutely Beautiful! To be able to wake up to that everyday is a slice of paradise. I have some family that live there as well. My grandfather was stationed there in the Army and ended up staying so I have some uncles and cousins that still live there. My cousin Allen took me around the whole island and showed me a ton of stuff, I'd live there in a HEARTBEAT if I could but don't know if I could leave the South :laughing9:

Fantastic finds Josh! Congrats on finding that site! Love the linen covered button and muliti ring sharps. Beautiful presentation too as always! -Bob

Again, congratulations on finding that awesome site! :headbang:

I need to take some research lessons from you!

You have made some great saves, I too like the linen covered button. Makes me curious to know how the guilting on it fared after all these years, but not enough to try & remove the linen if it was mine.... :tongue3:

Really cool post & site. I always enjoy your posts.
Thanks!

I like the button still wrapped :o Makes you wonder how nice it might be :-\

To the contrary of the many, I much prefer the one piece "canon".

Yes sir, that is load of lead, and buttons, I'm guessing you may have even surprised yourself.

Damnnnnnn. You are the man! Look at all that lead. Soo many buttons too. Id say that was one hunt you wont forget! AWESOME :headbang: :headbang:

:o :o Spectacular site and mind boggling amount of finds . Eagle wrapped in linen is as good as it gets for a buried Civil War button . Banner Worthy finds ! 8) 8) is it a general staff or can you make out a letter in the shield ??? Anyway save some digs for the upcoming " J Team Re Union / Confederation Hunt " , brutha man :laughing7: :occasion14: dawg

Oh Josh you can not believe how bad I feel about not being able to go to the November DIV hunt. I was really looking forward to hunting with y'all again. I WILL be at the spring hunt for sure and I hear it is supposed to be a fantastic hunt. I moved from East Tennessee to further East Tennessee and about 30 minutes from Virginia and about an hour from Mike and about an hour and a half from Guy. I am kind of end the middle of everyone so we can get some more hunts in. Who knows, we may end up knocking on your door to see if you would like to go hunting.

your fellow compatriot
