We have been waiting on the Winter Barley to be harvested with bated breath. Firstly we were glad we were not detecting yesterday which was the hottest day EVER in the UK. Today we detected in thunder storms instead, having to bolt to the car twice during the worst of it. I welcome the rain & getting wet in warm weather is not an issue as the softer ground was a blessing.
What wasn't so great was he never got the straw in, so every 5th run on our gridding was unsearchable & in places the stubble was 10 inches tall! We also had to tackle the wind flatten crop areas as well, so we must have missed lots.
However, this first grid before the later cultivation will give us a good idea of the size of the scatter, which is very spread out but not as dense as we hoped. 6 Hours;

10 Roman Bronze Coins - 1 good one: UPDATE - Looks like a Rare one! (watch this space)
1st C AD Fibula
Broken Fantail Roman Brooch
2 Roman Partifacts (maybe a belt slide & fitment)
2 Tudor Buckles
2 Lead Cloth Seals
Late 18th C Silver Spoon - Complete & buckled but I will get someone to straighten it.8-)

Nice, Cru. Looking forward to a pic of the spoon once "restored".

Nice finds and hopefully won’t stay hot for long.

Looks like another great day for you, Cru. When conditions get better you should do very well with that permission.
Congrats.

Congrats on all those excellent finds Cru.

True for this field , & it's a new permission which doubled when another family member spotted us in the field some weeks back. So lots of fields to try, although most with no intel, so risky until the the options are limited.

Another great hunt, congrats! :occasion14:

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Great finds. Looks like a promising site.

South Wales but not Cardiff, & not to detect.

UPDATE:

Cru'dad is having problems IDing the Antoninus Pius Coin below, which is always a good thing. We will call upon some help & update shortly.

I'm sure you and Cru Dad are getting tired of digging all those Roman coins and Medieval relics, so finding the late-18thc silver spoon must've been invigorating! :laughing7:
Can't wait to see what it looks like after you get it restored.

Your heatwaves in the UK do have some benefits...

Dave

If Crudad can't ID a roman coin on first sight it must be a rare variant. Great start with a rare coin and the fantail brooch. These fibulae make the site start quite early. :hello2: A chance for denarii made of good silver.

Very nice finds for sure.....

(rare or a good imitation, as its well under weight)
Yeap, getting the British Museum involved in the ID, so should have an answer this week.
An early Silver is my hope as well, but as we only have 1 day of gridding left, it will have to wait until cultivation.
