Visit to the park gave me a Woodie!

Since the weather is cooperating nicely, I went out to the clad park once again. Didn't let me down, 30 more clad and a nice surprise.

A Woodrow Wilson Commemorative Token.

Unless I'm wrong, this token was made by the Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut during the early 20th century. Scovill was established in 1802 as a button manufacturer and is still in business today. Scovill was an early industrial American innovator, adapting armory manufacturing processes to mass-produce a variety of consumer goods including buttons, daguerreotype mats, and political tokens.

Only token of the year, and it made my day!

Ongoing park count:202 clad, 9 wheats, and 4 silver.

Nice finds digger460! I really like that token. They are so cool to see posted. The only tokens I have found so far are from game rooms I went to as a teenager. HH

Nice finds.

That token is from a 60's Shell gasoline giveaway. I found a Franklin Roosevelt one a few years ago that is same design. Still really cool.

Disclaimer: (I am not telling your wrong (by any means!)) I automatically search when I get a response from a thread, just to double check.

So I searched Shell's gasoline giveaway, and sure enough :BangHead:

, you were right, they were giving away presidential tokens! So naturally I searched, and searched, and searched, and could not find the one that I found. During my search's I came across one that was posted on Tnet.

This to was described as a gas giveaway by Shell.

When I came home with it, I did a quick search, and the first link I clicked on was from the Woodrow Wilson Commemorative Token | National Museum of American History These are the two pics if you don't want to click on the link.

This was the one posted on Tnet in 2005.

So I still wasn't sure what to think about it, so I took a closer look.

Here's mine with a few letter's underlined for comparison.

and the one from the Smithsonian.

Look at the letter's that I underlined on mine. Do you think they are from the same run?

Now unless the Smithsonian collects gas giveaway's, My conclusion is that it is not a giveaway.

Also, I read that most giveaway's were made of aluminum. This was is way to heavy for aluminum. It's also stated that the one from the museum is smooth on the edge's, mine is also.

I've checked tokencatalog but there was nothing there.

Again I'm not disagreeing with you (well maybe a little now :laughing7:

) because I'm not hearing what I want to hear, but what do you guy's think?

I know it's not the find of a life time, just want to know for my collection :icon_thumright:

And maybe it will be help for someone else that has one.

Hi Digger,

Definitely not trying to take away your excitement, I hope you are correct that is the Scovill token. I guess there were aluminum and bronze Shell tokens, my FDR was bronze and had a very similar design as yours. When I get home after this weekend I'll post a picture of it.

Doing a quick check I found this link to 73 Bronze tokens (and other shell tokens) but the Wilson in that set is looking straight ahead not profile like on yours

Thanks Pete, hopefully it's a Scovill. Will at least add another 50 yrs. to the find. Fingers crossed!

This what my token looks like, I found it a few years ago and think after I figured out it may have been the from 1992 Bronze Shell tokens I tumbled it to clean it up.

You can see it is pretty much the same style as yours, but don't think mine is in the Smithsonian.

Sorry the pictures kind of stink my phone camera lens is getting pretty junked up and wont clean up anymore.
