I found this brass thing yesterday in Natchez Mississippi and i don't have a clue what it is. On one side it is stamped improved 1855 and on the other it is stamped W. W Waddell. I also found the round brass thing with an eyelet and don't have a clue about it also. Any help would be appreciated , thanks in advance.

I could be way wrong, but my first thought is a surgeons bullet probe. There are some similar devices in google images, but I didn't see any like your's in a quick search.

Looks like someone found one in a treasurenet post dated feb 4 2012.

It may be a lightning rod. I found this ad - from The Southern Business Directory and General Commercial Advertiser, Volume 1 (1854) in Google Books.

Also a photo of what is thought to be Ben Franklin's lightning rod.

Cool it's nice to finally know what that was. I was wondering if you had figured it out. Pretty cool find. I never would have thought it was an old lightning rod.
