Cool find, I recently found one too. Congrats.

Nice. What mint?

I hate to be a Debby downer but if the mintmark isnt above the dome, it's not silver for the 1942 nickel

Great find though!

I think I've only ever dug up one of those in nine years detecting - nice find !

My thought too. Please take a pic of the back. Still an oldie.

Not a war nickel sorry :(. A war nickel contains 35% silver. It is marked by a P, D, or S over the dome. You'll find one eventually! But ID still be happy to find that nickel. I don't come across to many 42 nickels while CRHing or detecting. Good luck and happy hunting. That site should have some goodies waiting!

AK your doing the right thing, people should know what they have... :icon_thumright:

Its real, its just not an official "War Nickel" Still a nickel, still around the time of the war. Its just before they made the switch to the silver issue. I kinda value these more than the War Nickels cause they seem harder to find. Don't get your hopes down the real deal is just around the corner.

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

As Debbie Downer said, you need to have the big mint mark over Monticello, for it to be a war nick. 42 is the only year that you can't tell just from the date. All 43-45 are war nicks only. Of course we still flip them over to see what the mint is, but we already know its there. I've found 4 rolls of war niks CRH and the only one I'm lacking is the 42 D.

I found one in my front yard on Sunday along with a 1945 Merc and a buffalo nickel and a couple of wheat pennies. I had been having trouble with my F5 finding anything old/deep. My house was built in 1948 and I felt sure that someone had to lose something good in the yard. On Sunday I turned threshold up to max and found these five coins in the same hole. Thanks for looking.
