rock - shaped by indains :icon_thumright:

Obsidian is the material, not too familiar with the type of obsidian though. The object itself is probably a cutting tool/scraper.

Very nice. The rock is called "Duo Flow, Mahogany Obsidian". Could be an incompleted piece,
or possibly a mouth knife or small scraper. I grew up in North Dakota, just off of one of the
reservations, and we found thousands of indian artifacts on our family farm. I have found the
standard black obsidian pieces, but have never found a mahogany piece like yours. :icon_thumleft:

Mortifier cain: I understand that agate, flint and chert and probably others can sometimes have the "chipability" improved by heating it in a fire, and a bigger chunk can have water dripped on it and break into very workable pieces. I suppose that would be a good thing, but I don't know that the ancients were too color conscious. There is a guy in Ohio, I think, that has claimed a agate outcropping that the agate, when heated, produces some spectacular reds yellows and blues, and he is a world class rock knocker.

I love mahogany obsidian, and would someday like to personally collect some. I do have a small arrowhead from Calif that is M O, but I think that they valued it highly out there and obsidian just didn't get traded too much to the Colorado ancients. I know there have been some, but there is also a lot of agate around here, and flints in Kansas, and huge amounts of flints in Texas, which the Indians in Colorado migrated close enough down there for the buffalo to have plenty of tool material.
