Was the Franklin Hotel/Morriss Inn an established Safe House?

Sounds a bit silly at first glance, ah, but there is also much to feed this newly developing possibility. In 1817 an entire host of events were under way that may have required such an operation in this very location. Big money always leaves a trail and the events that were under way would have required big money, money that would have to have been secretly moved around congress. The United States Secret Service wasn't officially established until 1865, however, the United States Treasure Department had been around since before the turn of the century. Government Officials wishing to fund clandestine operations needed money in order to run those operations, but they also needed that money on lamb, clearly out of view of the eyes of congress. For instance, you can't fund clandestine filibuster operations in the south and southwest without money, and you can't finance clandestine explorations into the west and northwest without money, everything takes money, and it takes big money, secret money. In order for a government official to fund these activities out of the seeing eyes of conress he would need one above all else, he would absolutley have to have a trusting and worthy ally in the United States Treasury Department. And the second most important thing he would need is a convenient place of operation, a place where any number of people could meet without raising suspicion, a place that is not only acustom to, but also has a generally accepted reputation for such comings and goings. You need a place where the influential and generally unknown can meet with only routine accepted attraction. So question is, how well do you know your history, and do you think there is the possibility that Franklin Inn/Morriss Inn, was something a bit more then just a hotel?

TRUTHFULLY, no. There was NO Morris Inn, ONLY the Franklin Hotel, built as previously stated. There was a DEPRESSION in Lynchburg, Va. as previously stated... in 1819. Robert MORRIS (former Mayor of Lynchburg, Va. in 1813) lost LOT of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ from his investments, as previously "stated". Source of $$$$$$$$$$ for SECRET "Spy" stuff was Robert MORRIS, Jr., FINANCIER of the American Revolution against GB. It does look like Robert MORRIS, Mayor of Lynchburg, Va. (1813) was his grandson or something. Robert MORRISS may be RM, Jr. Great Grand Son or something... STILL looking into THIS. I DO have a copy of a letter from Robert MORRIS, Jr. (Financier) to General George Washington, written in NUMBER Code, similar to BC #1-3. SO! They DID have "secret stuff" going on during the Revolutionary War, with CIPHERS! (SUNNY & WARM out...)

Administrations still have to distance themselves from such affairs, and they do that by way of key appointments in key places, and then these appointees do the same, and so on. As an example, in 1813 a bill was introduced into congress that would have effectively addressed the refitting of prize vessels into privateering vessels in American ports. This was a very hot national and political topic during the era, to find a means of stopping this illegal refitting of prize vessels. It was also a very sensitive subject and the largest complaint of the Spanish in regards to America's support of the privateers that were wrecking their commerce. This was one of the main driving forces behind the creating of the bill. Basically this bill suggested that all prize vessels had to be scuttled at sea, with only the passengers and cargo being allowed to be brought into American custom ports. Seemed like a reasonable and effective solution to the problem. However, one key player managed to rally the congressional troops to get this bill dropped and his name was none other then, Henry Clay. Is this why his name was mentioned in the pamphlet along with several others? Perhaps. In fact there are a few other curious events that Henry Clay was directly involved with that beg a lot of questions.

HENRY CLAY...? "Google" Henry Clay - Proud American & Proud Mason (FM) @ Masonic World.com; had "connections" with the French FreeMasons, down in New Orleans... even Napoleon was a FreeMason. So why did Clay rally the troops against that bill? When Joseph Bonaparte came to the United States Clay offered him his usual suite to stay in. In the following years Clay was a frequent visitor to Bonaparte's fabulous estate supposedly under the pretense that the estate's unparalleled library was the reason for his frequent visits.

Nearly all of the insurgencies involved military figures, either past or present, and the same can also be said of the various privateering operations. It's interesting when we look at the treasury department and the timeliness of one administration's placing it squarely into the hands of the war department, that individual's vacated seat as Secretary of war thus being handed over to a Banker, the same banker who would eventually be sent on a mission into Texas and the disputed territory.

Now look at the map I provided again because many of the names in this network can be connected back to Bedford County, Richmond, and the surrounding area. So how convenient was a safe house in the Bedford/Lynchburg area, in fact, if any of this is true then it would have even been, perhaps, a requirement.

One thing that I've found to be so very under stated is about the battle of New Orleans. If it wasn't for the help of Laffite we would have lost that battle and probably the war. Laffite provided almost all the cannons and powder and flints to others. All this praise falls back on Jackson. Without the privateers Jackson may have been written about like Custer.

Well, at the time the administration had several things in its favor:
1) Expansion was being hotly pursued by speculators from all walks of life.
2) A huge influx of desperate refugees exiled from their homelands.
3) A weakening Spain that was facing revolt in nearly every corner of the world.

Just think of the concept within the notion of a patriot army and then add to this the ability to also utilize 1 & 2 above. In essence, this is no different then what the CIA engages in today. It's a means of waging war without declaring one. During the later part of Madison's administration and then into Monroe's administration several key changes took place within the treasury department and war department. The Secretary of War took over the Treasury department and his position was then filled by a Banker with a strong military background. And where was the U.S. mint/treasury at this time? This interim Secretary of War then proceeds to have direct contact with the insurgents/privateers, as did Jackson and several others. Jackson's timely thrust into western Florida was only made after enough unrest had been established in the region by the insurgents to allow it. And here again, Jackson also played a huge role in securing the pardons for many of these insurgents and privateers.

When we consider these insurgents and privateers we have to ask ourselves "Why didn't the U.S. do anything to stop these actions when they certainly had the means to do so?" In the public eye they were denouncing them, yet when we research their actual actions in attempting to stop these actions we discover that they actually took steps to prevent this as well, that is, right up until the time that they had finally gained what they had been after, only then did they set out to put a stop to the insurgencies and the privateering.

As you and I are both aware of, not only was the Battle of New Orleans the final blow against the British (and actually the treaty had already been signed before the event) but it was also the means by which the final front against the Spanish was to be fueled. After the treaty with the British the Spanish were only thing standing in the way of those critical American borders. Whoever owned west Florida and New Orleans held the gateway into the very heart of the country.

Let's leave names out of it for now, just exploring the possibility the Franklin was actually an established point of operation in relation to the events and funding/driving sources. And the "Bedford" on that map should read, "Bedford Co."

Several sources on the Franklin House but it sure seems the research varies from source to source?

I've realized this morning that the map shows yet one key simple thing. Not who at what but the access to the water to travel easily to gain quicker travel thru the country. Also the towns would indicate two other things I'm researching. For now I give one, these towns had a number of wealthy people.

Now what do the towns have in common. Richmond and new orleans are gateways to the interior. Lynchburg a gateway to the plains. St. Louis a gateway to the west.

The gateway cities were always high traffic hubs for in this case questionable commerce that I believe is a huge part of our passion in BP. So what was a driving force in questionable commerce? Demand! So what was in high demand in these towns at these times? And what made the demand higher in these towns more than others?

That map, when I look at it, I see "network". Give me a bit as the map is actually one other important piece of detail.
