Got this in a storage locker auction I won.

Washington Medallian.webp

It is the size of a silver dollar.
It is non-magnetic.
It weighs 19.25 gms.
It has a thin gold plating that I believe was deposited by the ENIG (electroless nickel immersion gold) process. The same process used on electronic PCBs, etc.
The base metal is some copper/nickel alloy.
The medallion has a date of 1789 - the date of Washington's first election as POTUS.
It is obviously not made in 1789.

Has anyone ever seen a commemorative Washington medallion like this? Any history you can share?

Thanks,
James

Nice find.

I'm curious....have you/anyone you know ever found anything valuable in one of those lockers?

To me shows like Storage Wars seems incredibly fake and staged but I was just wondering if you ever come across anything remotely similar to the kind of things they find.

I went to a couple and each and every locker had been gone through, even to the extent of ripping apart bags of clothes. At one place the owner even had a little store selling the stuff.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

Sorry I didn't do a Google search on it. But, the medals shown on the U.S. Mint website don't have a gold finish and this one definitely does.

I'm going to contact the mint and ask if they ever offered these medals with an ENIG gold surface.

This was my first auction and it definitely was a winner for me.

I got the 10' x 20' locker for $5.00!:happy3: It was full of old electronics, laptops, towers, PCB boards, etc. Still sorting through the stash . . .

I do PM recovery and refining from eWaste and this locker doubled my inventory of recyclables.8-)
