I've got a new ATPRO and would like to do some water detecting. Should I just randomly start searching rivers and creeks? I know swimming holes are a good start but were else should I check?

No, you do not just start hunting "random rivers and creeks". It's as you surmise that you need to go to the places where swimming and/or recreation goes on.

Oh, and if you're in zones of "boom and bust" cycles of river levels (where water levels fluctuate highly each year of seasons), then be aware that beaches can come and go. Sand can get washed away 1 yr, then new sand settles in with another high-water event, and so forth.

You have to do research if you want to make finds.
