Water line inside the sluice

[Sluicer]

Well I've been so busy with work and everything else lately that I haven't been able to get out much but I got to thinking when you have the sluice in the stream you would want to be able to look at the side of the sluice and shouldn't the waterline ( the one inside the sluice) be straight (minus the angle downward) or should it make a drop and rise very time it hits a riffle? Thanks for any and all help
