Can't help on the brass piece but the button dates between 1834 and 1843.

The brass dohicky is used to splice electrical wire together. Fit the wires in the hole and turn the bolt to hold them in place. Just off hand I can't think of a name, except coupler. Connector also comes to mind. Coupler is more for hydralics.

The ornate brass piece is some type of 'decorative' piece. It could have gone on the front of a vintage brass fireplace screen.
