Re: weird penny

Coin experts needed. What could cause such a weird indentation around the rim of this coin? Good eyeballs whitesid!

what can this be it looks like it is split down the center. error maybe?
heres a picture, please know that the Pict color is off. in the middle where it looks like the zinc core it is not this is a copper penny

What year is it? Maybe there was a brief period where other metals were used when making pennies.

Wasn't 1982 the year they quit making copper pennies and started using zinc?

It looks like zinc in the center. If it is, I'd say the "split" is just where the zinc corroded around the outside edge.

its not zinc its just the weird light you can see that in the new pic i also tryed it out on the detector and that says its a copper penny to.

Perhaps it was an encased coin that had been punched out of the holder - the "Keep Me and Never Go Broke type. Usually encased "pennies" are encased in aluminum that is softer than copper and the rim wouldn't be deformed like this, though. John in ID

Are there any marks on the obverse and reverse that might indicate it had been in a vise?

Here's my wild and unsubstantiated guess...
When coins are punched out of the sheet metal, they are then sent to a machine to "roll" the rims. Perhaps this penny didn't quite go through the "rolling" process corectly....
