I started on my day going to search for an old homestead in the woods and I our woods are so thick you can bounce off of them, so needless to say by the time I found it I was exhausted and there's only an 16 inch swing span before you hit some sort of branch or vine. So I left the jungle and went to an old ballpark just to have some open space in the next town over. Amongst all the clad I was very happy to get a war nickel and then to my amazement, only the second time, I got a SLQ! Finally!!! :laughing. It has a D Mint Mark and the three stars on the reverse just no date. I just wish I knew what the day was but I'm happy. IMG_1018.webpIMG_1019.webpIMG_1024.webpIMG_1023.webp

Get some acid silver gold testing solution....put it on the date of the coin over and over until the date shows....I did one that looks identical to yours only an S mint. Got the lighting just right and boom 1918 S.....it is very faint but should come through. May lower the value but....value is close to melt on the no dates anyway....At least I know the date now.....lol

beautiful coin, just an awesome silver to see in the ground, especially if it is yours. Congrats on the SLQ find:headbang:

Sweet! Nice post title too. You tricked me! [emoji4]

Yes....sorry I am multi tasking....I believe the testing solution I used was JSP testing solution and it will turn it a greyish color....turning the coin in multiple angles helped but after about four drop cycles it showed up. I took some 0000 steel wool when done on the coin and I couldn't even tell I had done anything. There is a YouTube video of a detectorist using this and it came through for him as well....I believe he also did a buffalo nickel and it worked.

I'm going to do it in 3 stages First: Soak it in vinegar then use a eraser. If that doesn't work. Second: I will do your method. If no date still Third: I will use my date restorer for nickels. I do realize it's not a key day 1916/17 and a not even a low minted "S" so this is just pure curiosity and boredom.
