Went to my favorite site today. It's where I found my great coat button(1815-1830), I think I may have found a cuff button to go with it. The site is still giving up the round balls(both dropped and shot). I found half of an old cavary horse bit...I think the copper is trade copper??. a cool Acme whistle. iron thingy with a little silver gilding, and a bunch of assorted junk.....

Re: Went to the old cavary campsite

Have never found any coinage at this site? ? ? YET...It is suppose to be the site of the first Post Office in the state of Kansas also..There has been many nice native artifacts found at this location, in fact there was a skeleton found about 16 years ago in the creek...turned out to be a native that washed out of the bank. thanks for the good words. Anyone seen a button like that? It has writing on the back but my worn-out eyes can't read it....All I can make out with my loop is a "R" I think? :tard:

The old guy that owns the property says "This is part of the Oregon Trail/ Military road(Ft. Scott to Ft. Leavenworth), and the site of the first Post Office in the state." There is a ferry crossing on the river not far from this site(I do know a direct descendant of the ferry owner also). In my research of the area: I have found out about a Shawnee indian pay station(circa 1820), Pony express depot, and a small town by the name of secondine(?) in the vicinity. I believe that Natives did infact occupy this site also, but at an earlier date??. Many stone artifacts have been found, along with cavalry relics. There has been spanish coins found not too far from this site. But you may be on target with that assumtion???? Everything is either real old or real new. The owner was telling me yesterday he had found many wagon wheels, brass US marked tack items, and stone artifacts. I'm hunting it every chance I get this year...

Lotta cool stuff!!
I would keep going back there too...
