8)I understand there is GOLD to be found in the U.P. too;according to those directory of Buried Treasures for Michigan;sold by Kellyco........Im going on vacation Labor Day week myself-will be up Mac City area-good luck;wishv I could make it,too!!!

Iv been going to the U.P for a few years now looking for copper. I cant say a detector will do you much good with the all the copper thats still in the tailings. I never had a detector when I went looking, I just feel for the copper in the rock. Good places to look is where people go to detect, the leave a ton of copper lay around because they cant tell what rock its in, I found a real nice fist sized piece with silver in it that way.

I read something about gold mines in the U.P, think I might have a list of there locations laying around somewhere.

most of the gold is in the north central Marquette, Ishpeming area with silver and some copper, the further west is heaver copper with some gold and silver. back in the 1880 there were about 40 gold mines in the Marquette area along with the iron ore mines. the ground it pretty mineralized from MQT to the west.

snakebit will have to do that. up at Old Victoria in the late 1700's the English tried to mine copper. i have a buddy at work that is from that area and use to collect copper when he was working at the white pine mine. also have a crazy ghost experience that happened to me in silver city, when a few of us were working at stone container and stayed at a supervisors house. made a true believer out of me! anyhow have you checked out any of the ghost towns in the Kewaunee?

Hey guy's. I'm in Iron River, never found any copper but have allways wanted to! I tried finding somebody last summer to go up to the keweenaw for a hunt but no luck. From what i've read placer gold has been found in lots of the rivers here in the U.P. I remember reading a story about a man from L'anse that would disapear for several weeks and return with a pack loaded with silver nuggets. I'm sure a person would be able to pan for silver and copper in that area also. Oh yea and dont forget about the "wall of silver"

that man found the nuggets up in the skanee area from one of the tributary's of the yellow dog river, while he was logging in the Huron MTS., he died in a hotel fire that year. the yellow dog is where they are trying to put that mine in. Ive never read of gold nuggets being found but there is plenty of flour gold around. and the hard rock gold found in the quartz is a lot harder to find. most of the mines in the Early day just didn't produce, from what Ive read it was a matter of financing and terrain and poor crushers rather than the lack of gold.
