Source: F.L. Coffman's "1001 Lost, Buried, or Sunken Treasures", c. 1957, p. 180: "10. Near Westfall, Oregon, Charles Becker plowed up a sum of $5,000 in gold on his farm." As this is included in a book published in 1957, the find had to be prior to 1957.

Did some more research on this, as it seemed totally unlikely.

Charles Becker is listed as an early-day pony express rider.

He had a ranch near Westfall, Oregon. Westfall may not be exactly desolate, but it isn't the center of culture either.

Assuming Coffman was correct, and likely obtained this information from a newspaper clipping, this was a HUGE cache for the timeframe.

And it just happened to be found on his ranch? I'm suspecting something else here.

The ranch is mentioned in a comment here. "My Great-Great Grandfather Charles Becker had a ranch in westfall. He lived out his life there after he was done riding for the pony express. Married a school teacher and rode horseback to the coast for their honeymoon."
