what am I doing wrong

Nothing,

the machine isn't going to be 100% accurate (especially) if/when you're relying on the "screen/read out".

It's only a "guide" more or less.

Sometimes the machine will be fooled by what it sees based on size, shape, compostion of the metal, etc. etc. etc.

"When in doubt - dig".

Could you have missed the dime in the dirt? A clad dime is small and does tend to blend in real well with the soil. I have no doubt what lonewolf and omni says as I've had that happen as well.

Hi Frog, I agree with LW on this. My ACE will read the same if it is hard packed foil or a ball shape. You have to listen closely though, the signal is usually different. You'll know after time and practice!!!

My ACE loves dimes and will ring one up like it is going to a fire! I only use it for coin shooting and I discriminate out foil. Even without discriminating out foil it sounds different on my ACE, usually ringing up as a penny rather than a dime on my machine. Using a burried dime and a similar piece of foil, try backing off your sensitivity a notch at a time until you can hear the difference. Another thing I noticed just recently is that if you are detecting in grass with a heavy dew you may have to back your sensitivity way down to about two notches. The wet grass acts almost like water sometime...sometimes it don't . You just have to expriment at the time and it only takes a few minutes to figure it out. I read in one book on detecting to think of sensitivity as depth, but with it turned way down I am still getting targets at 6". Of course I have no way of knowing if I am missing some unless I turn the sensitivity up and go back over the same area. In my experimenting, most of what I am missing is trash. JIM

Hehe I just got my ace 250 yesterday, and its my first detector. I had the same problem. Was in all metal and had the sens at full strength had a strong ring on the display, I was tickled. Just to be sure I dug an extra wide hole around the target because I didn't want to miss it. I dug a foot deep and didn't find anything but a broken bottle there that had a bottle cap beside it lol.

So I decided to go and try it at about 1/2 strength and bang right on the money identified the bottle cap by the detector. So I tried this out on the rest of my finds as well and it worked good for me I think anyway. Just a thought.

And the 250 loves anything round!! If it is round it will ring. I dont get falses on foil much, but if they are a little round ball, ding ding ding. Of course pull tabs will hit like a nickel also.

Mine likes the older fat caps that I'm guessing would have come from a two liter pop. Those give great penny and dime signals, usually dime.
