I've used a Metel detector! Is that unusual also?

Not unusual at all. When they did research at the Custer battle site they brought in hobby detectorists to scan the area. When they found a target, they placed a flag. Later, the arkies dug all the targets. They did digs at the battlefield in 84-85, again in 89 and 94. Another major survey was done in 2005.

It certainly isn't the norm and is frowned upon by most archaeologists.

Yes, arkies frown on a lot of stuff. Like picking up arrowheads off the surface. Or digging them up on your own private property. Or selling those artifacts for money. “Holier than thou” is a saying that comes to mind. Or how about “rules for thee but not for me.” Arkies are useful but need to stay in their own lane. There’s plenty of contract work and millions of acres of gov owned ground for them to do research on. Private property is where the line should be drawn.
