What could this possibly be?!?

Hey guys,

My step son found this a few days ago and he has me stumped. He's in southeastern WI and was on a telephone hole digging crew that day (normally he is digging trenches to lay cable lines). He said it came up from about three feet down when the hole was being dug. He thinks the square hole appears to have hand made marks, and said the hole goes about half way through the stone.

Any ideas? Man made? Natural I can't think of anyone purposely spending the time to do something like that by hand!

Yes, but are those crystals and that type of rock found together? The seem totally dissimilar in origin.

it does not have to be that the crystal formed at the same time as the other rock...the other rock could have formed AROUND the crystal.

like these do...
