I'm new......What are the valuable coins? what year generally. I know pre 1964 all are 90% silver. But after that date what are the contents of silver for the dollars/halves. What other coins are good from 1965 on. And what makes a coin a "proof".

thanks.....I think I'll go out to buy some coins in the morning and sort during the snow storm we are waiting for Yeah 6-12" of the whgite stuff.

Ok here is the beak down
For circulated coins
Halves
1964 and before are 90% silver
1965-1970 are 40% silver

Quarters
1964 and before 90% silver

Dimes
1964 and before 90% silver

Nickels i would look for all that are pre 1960
1942-1945 are silver some 1942 are not split year

pennies any penny before 1959

Now Proof coins are called such as to the methoed of manufacture. Where the mint uses high polished dies to make special coins for collectors which they sell in sets.
all modern proof will have a S mint mark I think they started using the s mint mark for proofs in 1976
I'm not positive on that

P.S. BTW This is my 100th Post ;D

Hope This Helps

Ditto on Diamond Spike's list. (Congrats on your full member status! I'm almost there too!)

Maybe one of the mods could put a sticky note about this topic.

Also on the pennies you look for "S" mint marks, errors and such. I have found 10 type II 1998s and last week I found an out of collar strike that was at 50%(no date). The 2000 type II is getting harder to find and I have yet to find a 1999 type II.
