The bullet is a UMC that appears to be a .44 cal. The cartridge is 1.5 inches long. Any rimfire that I have seen has a rectangle firing pin mark. Note that this one has 4 circles.
What gun would have a round firing pin?
Do the 4 marks indicate that it took 4 attempts to fire it? I have read that rimfires sometimes didn't fire and could be rotated 90 degrees and tried again.
Thanks for looking. Any thoughts?

Cool find, Is it 44 cal or 41 cal, or 43 cal ? Kinda looks like a 41 swiss Verrillie round,,don't think I spelled that right. They had a pronged firing pin.

Not sure, I have seen some 22's and some 32's leave round striker marks on the rim. Your shell casing is from the Union Metallic Cartridge Company - started in 1867, and merged with Remington in 1912.

Are you sure its a .44? I have a similar fully loaded round thats a .38 winchester center fire, very crude primer hole.looks like it was carved with a knife to fit the primer.

I think you guys are right about the Vetterli. My size was a guess since it is slightly bent and measured from .395 to .455. I found pictures of the firing pin and there are 2 pins and they are round. The bullet must have been fired twice to have the 4 pin marks. Thanks for the ID, guys.
