What is "hardcore' for a CRH?

What would be considered 'hardcore' for a CRH? $'s face sorted per week? Just wondering if anyone makes a 'living' at this?

The two banks I have accounts at DISCOURAGE (but don't yet refuse) to service large coin orders - but they have told me they have/had some people that would order 3-5K per week in halves!!!

My first bags were SLOW to go thru, but I can now sort and roll a $1,000 bag of halves in about an hour and a half if one of my younger kids helps out. I was contemplating hiring some of my son's unemployed friends at minimum wage to sort/hunt.
I can't remember if I've done 6 or 7K at this point, I’ll assume 7, so my total is:

20K per week at 8% = $1,600 per wk / 83.2K per year Not bad money for getting your fingers really, really dirty...

I wouldn't count on those results lasting long enough to hire workers.

I'd consider anyone sorting large amounts of dimes or pennies by hand to be pretty hardcore. I know I couldn't do it.

The problem is, that volume generally isn't sustainable, after a while banks will refuse to order you coin and your dump banks will start either charging a fee or refuse to take your coin outright. But it really just depends on your bank and how you treat them. Also, after a while an area essentially gets "hunted out" and all of the bags/boxes from the supplier start being recycled dumps, especially for halves, a lot less so for dimes and nickels.

The great reality is....No one can make a living at this.

It's for students, retired folk, teens with no worries, people involved in battered marriages who want the household to leave them the F alone for 1 hour per day while they CRH, coin collectors, liars and losers. Not sure what cateogory I fall in...but I think the long winded-rant cateogory about the need for solitude.

I try to do $2500-$3000 in dimes every week. I have also wondered if someone could make a living doing it. In large enough volumes it would be possible I guess. The problem is that you would be gambling in a sense. Some weeks would be good, but what happens when you hit a cold streak? For me it is a hobby and a type of savings that I cannot readily spend, but is there if an "emergency" were to arise.

just like investing you need to "diversify" your portfolio, spread out your pickups between different chains and branches, if you get a hot chain try to load up on those branches, etc, find a good dump bank(s)

seems like you are in a great vein right now, hope it lasts a while!

Unless you lived in a cardboard box and drank your own piss, there is no way in heck you could afford to do this for a living...period. While I believe an area cannot technically be hunted out as the silver is "restocked" continually; the velocity of coin you do would suppress the yield. If you drive to another area, time and fuel costs kill you.

You'd be better of buying a ten speed, a large plastic bag and go pick up cans on the side of the road. You'd make more money and be in better shape when all is said an done.

I search 2.5-3k a week in halves and another 2-2.5k a week in dimes. 5k a week is hardcore for me, I spend about 8 hours a week crhing between pickups, sorting and dumping...anymore and my wife and dog would leave me! :tongue3:

I would say an average week for me is about $200 in silver value at spot price of $40 per ounce (easy math) but some weeks are much, much better. In the last 6 weeks I've had a $582 week, a $506 week, a $386 week, and the other three weeks were all just over $200 each. :thumbsup:

I think the key to this hobby is not wearing out your welcome between ordering and dumping. Test the limits but have common sense, get a feel for what your tellers are comfortable with and reward them with some nice quality chocolates every month or two. I gave out 10 bags of chocolate just last week! :icon_sunny:

Hey SS, I do 4.5-6k in halves a week and about the same in dimes. I don't consider myself hardcore; maybe medium to upper medium. But the again, Denial isn't just a river in Egypt (you have to say it out loud) :laughing7:

I have never been big on the gift thing because it didn't "feel right" for some reason. Lately however I have been thinking about ordering up some gift baskets and bringing them to my top performing banks (both dump and pu) for Thanksgiving(my favorite holiday). Despite being a curmudgeon, I seem to have really good relations with all my banks (PU better than dump of course). A genuine act of thanks and giving.

There was a gentlemen on here who was unemployeed and pretty much lived off of his findings. He lived a good life but ran afoul of the rules of the forum and was banished to CRH hell.

I really miss his posts.... :'(
