what is it?

this is a heavy steel box aprox 25lbs 9" x 9" X 9" has 10 ceramic insulators on the top,found at New Smyrna beach today down in the sand about 2 feet deep near the water.

it might be an old antenna switchin device - like something the navy might have had in ww2. redarrow

I would say a transformer of some kind.

Looks like part of an old transformer to me. Was there a power pole nearby?

Yes, it's an old multi-tap step down transformer. Most likely from a piece
of old military radio / electronic gear of the tube era. Each ceramic
insulator was a different voltage tap. As a ham radio operator of many
years, I have a shed full of them!

Sounds like Zombee has the definate answer. I also had it pegged as a transformer of some sort.
