Could be several things. However what quickly comes to mind is barite. I've seen "similar" pieces of calcite to.

A drop of some acid will ID calcite since it will bubble and fizzle. Even an organic acid will do. (like vinegar or citric acid)
Just make sure to wash it quickly in water after the test - it dissolves in acid.
