I'm going to buy a good metal detector, recommendations, or suggestions as to which may be the "best" ? I hate adding a budget, because it makes people think about what they are going to suggest. Any budget, but I would like to keep it under $1000 (unless there is something that definitely worth the price).

Good comparison between the 3030 and V3i from someone who owns both machines:

I think he was fair and unbiased.

There is no single best machine. Metal detectors are like tools, each is designed for a specific job. You don't drive nails with a screwdriver, and you don't turn screws with a hammer.

The best machine is the one that is best suited to the task and used by an experienced operator.

The best detector... Is the one you're swinging! Now make the most of it!

In my opinion, Minelab Explorer SE Pro or Minelab E-Trac are the overall best

You have some good suggestions with a lot of experience using them. The only thing I would add and I wish someone would of told me when I got my first detector. Make sure with your budget you leave room for a good Digging tool and pinpointer. If you skimp in these areas you might end up not having a good time and stop detecting altogether.

I've used a lot of detectors, but I keep going back to Tesoro.

I agree. It's like going to KBB and asking "what's the best automobile?"
