I'm VERY confident that this is a pill box. I found this at a homestead that has been occupied since the 1920s and feel that it is a bit to "girly" for a snuff box.

The box was found very shallow in some sort of cloth material and didn't need a lot of work to polish up. Along with the box there were a couple of wheats and some silver coins, so my guess is that I found a "change purse" of sorts. Nothing real special since the newest coin was 1945. I do know that it is plated since I went down to original metal during the cleaning phase (it didn't need a lot...).

The MAIN thing I am looking to find out is what type of rock is on top of this critter. The wife loves the box and wants to know what the rock is so that she can look for some more antiques that go along with it...

Any ideas?

Charlie

Could it be a stamp box? Could it be tiger eye?

With the apparent layers, I would agree with abalone, may be dyed...

Can't verify abolone, but it is nacre, the material found on the inside of many clam shells, and even some snail shells (ever look inside a conch shell?). In jewelry, used to make cameo when the layers are eroded (worn off) to different depths. Mother of pearl is nacre, as are pearls.
