What is this vessel?

This peculiar copper vessel is adorned with a brass colored chain which is attached to the lid and also connects to tweezers like device and a hook with twin barbs. It has what appears to be a hanger with a sharp top point The overall height is 12 inches. There is nothing inside of the "pot"

Some sort of oil lamp, my wife has something similar, if I can dig it out I’ll post a picture.

Correct. Betty lamp. Mid to late 19th C. And a fancy one! Very nice!

Wow Thank you. So do you know did they use whale oil in it as someone told me? Do they have any value?

Whale oil - yes. Betty lamps can use any kind of grease, fat, or animal based oils to produce light. I've read that whale oil provided the best light.

Value - not really. Not life changing money anyway. I took a look on eBay and the asking prices run from @ $40 - $150. Yours is a nice piece and might command more...
