OK I went to quartz land the other day cause I found so many good pieces last yr there. This yr is a lot different (not much). Well I was walking and finding some scrapers but very weak in details. I saw what I thought was a piece of pect wood. I picked it up and thought it kinda looked neat so I set it down till the hunt was done. I picked it up on my way out and took it home. I didnt wash it till yesterday. Now I wonder what it might be and it could still be a piece of pect wood. There are some digging tools there that are suspect but I just havent brought them home cause they are just so darn hard to tell or prove. I just leave them. Well here are the pics and I will leave this up to the experts. I have never found one like it yet. Thanks, rock

Some more top and bottom. The bottom has a red stain on it. I didnt wash it hard cause of the material of the stone. This is 7 inches long and was found in N Ga.

Petrified wood comes in all sorts of textures and colors. Depending on what exactly preserved it and what stage its in. When silica replaces the wood material it agatizes and becomes glossy and glasslike. That's when it becomes good knapping material. Your piece looks like it is pet. Wood that at one time was Burt. The shape and the red staining on the bottom could lead one to belive it was used as a pestel to grind red ocre for paint. I don't know about that but its a nice piece of very old wood anyway.

not all is glassy,is my part of Texas its white and chalky

Here is a couple pieces in different stages.

Yeah I was thinking possible tool also. It looks like berry stain on the bottom. Now when I found it, it was all covered with mud and I didnt notice it till I rinsed it off. Even NA Indians used and liked Pect wood. It is very easy to work with. It is my first Pestel I have ever found.

If you think about it that's probably real good news for a lot of hobbyists.

It also reminds me of this piece that I have. Age old said this is probably pet wood. I think these type tools were used anciently for planting. Nice mystery find any way!
