Here's another relic I found from my hunt in Vicksburg Sunday. It's a musket lock plate. I believe this is to a flintlock? Can anybody confirm this and if so, what kind of flintlock. It was found in a Union camp. If it is a flintlock, I wonder why they would have such antique weapons? Any help would be appreciated. lockplt01.JPG lockplt02.JPG

Demand/ economy factored in flintlock conversions to percussion by modifying lock plates on some.
Some at least still retained hints of their origins.

The half moon cut on top of your lock plate may have matched the lower edge of a drum ( for a nipple) attached to barrel .

It looks to be a lock from a Model 1816 musket that was originally flintlock, but converted to percussion early in the war. The brass you see is part of the brass pan that was left in place after the pan itself was cut off.

Thanks for the information. This camp is producing lots of stuff. I also found a long knife I want to post up that I found at the site and get feedback.
Great info guys. I'm glad it's a flintlock. Kinda neat. Thanks again!!
