Don't know if this means anything or not, but I was watching a cooking show that was showing the tea making process in the Orient. The master tea maker used a pot very similiar to yours. Just a tought.

It might be a patient drinking cup, used by a health care worker for feeding liquids to an invalid. The handle is on the side because the patient did not hold the cup.
