I think you may be remembering 'Gossamer' (named thus since 1980 but previously unnamed or referred to just as 'Monster' in earlier cartoons, and then as 'Rudolph' for a while) but it's not him. For some reason he was always depicted wearing tennis shoes/sneakers, was a fairly bright orange-brown, and didn't have those curious facial features:
