I found this between a sidewalk and the street. I thought that it might have something to do with the power pole, that was close by.

My first thought was part of an old jack. Almost looks like a step for a foot

i already told you what this was today,on a differn post from you.
it gose to a water meter lid. its the locking part to the lid. it on the bottem side of the lid.
the key gose thu the small hole in the lid.on the top side.
into the hold you see on this part.
you turn the key. and it moves the rod back and opens up the lid.
do you not belive me.?
i read water meter for years.i know what it is for sure,.

no, i have not read water meters in 20 years
i look on the internet for picture of one but could not find a picture of the bottom side
its goes on the old type lid.made out of cast iron.
they been replace my the newer lids made out of plastic
because people was taking the lids and selling them for money

Yes this is a correct ID. I worked for the city water department for 10 years and have seen a many of these. The lids were round and made of cast iron and the locking mechanism was brass. Ford Meter Box company was a main manufacturer of these lids and I think this is the "Dallas" style type of lock.

Here is the type of lid that this piece belongs too. This lid is from New Orleans. Some water meter lids can be quite ornate and are collectible.
