what the heck is this

Found this yesterday on the penobscott river.I'm not sure what it is.It has lines running down both sides.It is neither slate or graphite.It tapers down and is also thinner as you go...Its really got me stumped.I believe it to be ceremonial as there are red paint cemeteries in the area...mjm
