I found This grommet at an 1900s motel that is now demolished and is a Park now. What were these grommets used for horse tack or a blanket for civilians? How old or at least what century were these grommets made? And used. Why is it Brown fe Being how long underground?

I'm not a grommetologist but similar eyelets have been used on fabric curtains for some time as well.
